23 Things I Learned in my 23rd Year of Life

April 25, 2024
  1. Friends, interests, and passions change. This naturally occurs with growth. Friends change, but the closest and best friends will always be there.

  1. The people you surround yourself with are absolutely critical; you become the average of the few people you spend the most time with.

  1. The people you aspire to be have absolutely nothing you don’t have. Successful people are regular ass people that worked hard, got a little lucky, and most importantly, tried. You are fully capable and have everything you need to do whatever it is you want to do. Go get it.

  1. The choices you make today, right now, directly affect the next week, month, year, 10 years, your whole entire life. Don’t underestimate today. Give yourself a happy life by putting effort in today.

  1. Fitness is about being able to play with your grandkids when you’re 80. Fitness is about always being capable of doing the hobbies and activities you love doing. Fitness is about being pain-free your whole entire life. Fitness is about not having a heart attack at 65. Fitness is about living as long and healthily and happily as possible. Looking good is just a byproduct that comes along with it.

  1. If they don’t have what you want, don’t listen to what they say. There’s no greater waste of time than justifying your actions to people who have a life you don’t want.

  1. Networking is everything in professional success. Networks compound over time and so too do opportunities and success.

  1. Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments. You can’t expect someone to do something or get mad at someone for not doing something if you never tell them you’d like them to do it.

  1. Hybrid training is the way. Unless you have a very specific physical goal, train for all-around health and longevity. All parts of fitness matter so prioritize them all. Cardio, strength, speed, power, mobility–do it all.

  1. Be a lifelong learner. Knowledge is powerful. Learning never gets old. Experience is the greatest teacher. Continually add new skills to your toolbox.

  1. Life paths are not one size fits all. It’s okay to not be doing the same things in life that your peers are doing.

  1. Real friends celebrate your wins. Real friends feel genuine joy when you feel genuine joy. That’s the biggest indicator of an actual friend.

  1. The easy choice = the wrong choice. What’s easier, watching mind-numbing tik tok for 45 minutes or a 4 mile run? Eating shit fast food or cooking a good meal? Sitting on the couch or giving your kids your undivided attention? Most humans default to the easy path. Don’t be like most humans.

  1. Don’t let your life become a list of protocols. Fitness, health, productivity are all crucially important things, but don’t let all your thoughts and life be overwhelmed and consumed by them. Go for a walk in nature because you love doing it, not because you know it’s good for you.

  1. Imposter syndrome is real. Everyone feels it; don’t let it stop you.

  1. You have an ego just like everyone else. Empathy can always be improved.

  1. Jealousy can be good. Envy is never good. Jealousy is wanting something someone else has and being inspired and motivated to achieve. Envy is wanting something someone else has and tearing them down because you don’t have it.

  1. Never stop communicating. It’s the only key to a successful relationship of any kind.

  1. Shut up and listen, and have real meaningful conversations. Don’t be a topper (Someone who constantly redirects the conversation back to them). Don’t desire the spotlight.

  1. Gratitude is a massive part of mental health. Take some time for some intentional gratitude every day and watch your happiness level go up.

  1. The people in your life have a limited amount of time on this earth just like you do. Make the effort to reach out to friends. Make the effort to see people in person. You’ll never regret time spent with people, but you absolutely will regret not making an effort to see the people you love when they’re gone.

  1.  You have to have purpose in life. If you wake up every day with no real purpose, you’ll mentally struggle day after day. There is truly nothing that matters more to your mental health. Find purpose. If your purpose incorporates helping others in some way that’s even better.

  1. Don’t be an asshole and don’t be a pessimist. Make a conscious effort to have a positive mindset all day every day. You don’t get to choose everything that happens to you, but you do get to choose how you react to it. Choose happiness, choose positivity, choose kindness. It makes your life better, and everyone around you’s life better.
